Due to its geographical location, Turkey is one of the countries under constant earthquake hazard and earthquakes cause great loss and destruction from time to time. Although all institutions in the country make efforts to reduce the effects of earthquakes, earthquakes can turn into disasters every time because the necessary precautions are not fully taken and the country is not adequately prepared. The February 6, 2023 earthquake in Kahramanmaraş has gone down in history as one of the most severe earthquake disasters ever experienced. This catastrophe has revealed that although a certain amount of knowledge has been accumulated in the fields of civil engineering and earthquake engineering in Turkey, new approaches are required for the effective realization and decisive implementation of this knowledge.
Since the first symposium in 1985, The Turkish Conference on Earthquake Engineering (TCCE), organized by the Earthquake Engineering Committee of The Turkish Earthquake Foundation and the Istanbul Branch of The Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers, has been one of the most prestigious conference series on earthquake engineering. The Earthquake Engineering Committee has been operating under the umbrella of the Turkish Earthquake Foundation since March 2009 under the name Turkish Earthquake Foundation - Earthquake Engineering Committee.
The 10th Turkish Conference on Earthquake Engineering will be organized internationally for the second time on October 8-9-10th, 2025 by the Earthquake Foundation of Turkey - Earthquake Engineering Committee and the Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers. The conference will bring together local and foreign researchers to review the existing knowledge and practices in the field of earthquake engineering. In addition, a wide range of topics such as regulations, earthquake resistant building design, performance-based design, construction technologies, digital technologies for earthquake engineering, retrofitting of existing structures, building retrofitting techniques, protection of historical and cultural heritage and disaster management will be discussed. In this respect, it is of great importance in terms of creating a platform where innovative solutions will be presented and current developments will be discussed.
Through the conference, it is also aimed to build a bridge between academics and professionals working in the field of application; to carry out research and application together and to reveal a safer building stock against earthquakes. At the 10th Turkish Conference on Earthquake Engineering, it is aimed to give a significant place to the resilience-oriented performance-based structural design and evaluation, which has come to the forefront in the world literature in recent years, in order to minimize earthquake losses. Increasing professional and social awareness on this issue will be an important step towards reducing the devastating effects of earthquakes.
